Student Summer Show Closes Aug 19

Don't miss your last chance to see the best of the 2010-11 year's senior thesis work as well as a selection of work created by CIA's sophomores and juniors.

This is the final week to see the best of last year's student work in the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Reinberger Galleries. Featuring capstone work by CIA’s graduating seniors, the 2011 Student Summer Show also highlights outstanding art and design by juniors and sophomores. Student names and gallery hours are available at cia.edu/summershow.

Students and faculty parse the nuances of art and language in a ritual as old as art itself with results that are, more often than not, dazzlingly beautiful, thought-provoking, humorous, and even functional.

The materials range from traditional paint and canvas, ceramics, ink, pencil, wood, and textiles, to tree branches, bones, crumpled fabric, barbed wire, glass shards, artificial flowers, digital photography, computer animation, and Internet art; the imagery includes livestock, automobiles, portraits, animal carcass, movie actors and actresses, historical figures like Thomas Jefferson and Rosa Parks, machine tools, landscapes, houses, and nearly everything else imaginable. CIA students turn cozy familiarity into something postmodern and urbane with a clear voice of their own.

Meticulously crafted, winningly decorative in the very positive sense of the word, and visionary, the Student Summer Show gets better the longer you look.
