SculptureX Opens June 17, Featuring Two CIA Faculty

CIA drawing department head Sarah Kabot and sculpture department head Charles Tucker are among six artists featured in SculptureX 2011 at the Sculpture Center.

Cleveland Institute of Art professors Sarah Kabot (Drawing) and Charles Tucker (Sculpture) are among six artists featured in SculptureX 2011, a curated selection of the work of exceptional sculptors and installation artists teaching at colleges in Ohio and western Pennsylvania. SculptureX opens at The Sculpture Center in Cleveland on Friday, June 17 from 5–8pm, with an artist’s talk at 6:30pm. The show is on view until Aug. 20. A complementary exhibition runs July 9 to Sept. 25 at the Erie Art Museum. Details about the exhibition and the featured artists are at sculpturecenter.org.

Responding to the invitation of The Sculpture Center, the Erie Art Museum, and the Art Department of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, 75 artists teaching at 35 art programs submitted work for this curated exhibition. From these submissions, curator David Carrier chose a curatorial theme and six artists to include in the exhibition.

“This recent art made in our region builds upon the achievement of post-minimalism,” Carrier writes about his selection. “Often employing a grid to structure their works, frequently making architectural references, these artists are interested in what you find at the intersection between nature and the urban environment. Without making explicit political statements, they all are concerned to demonstrate how three-dimensional visual art can be critical of our everyday worldview.”

Founded in 2010, SculptureX is a teaching and networking resource and a promotional platform for sculptors and educational institutions in the Ohio–Pennsylvania region. The well-attended The State of Sculpture symposium at the Cleveland Institute of Art in November 2010 exemplified how Ohio and Pennsylvania institutions may collaborate to promote sculpture and installation art.

Following upon The State of Sculpture's success, Sculpture Symposium #2: The State of the MFA will be held at the Cleveland Institute of Art on Saturday, October 15, 2011.
