A retired graphic designer and art professor who taught at the Ohio State University, the former Western Reserve University, the Akron Museum of Art, and at Kent State University for 25 years, Joseph O’Sickey is a lifelong painter and passionate advocate of the value of sketching. His paintings are in countless corporate, museum, and private collections.

“I’m delighted that Joseph O’Sickey is receiving this recognition of his talent and his achievement as a visual artist,” said CIA President Grafton J. Nunes. “Over a long career he has mastered several styles and forms, finding beauty and unity in the world around us.”

O’Sickey was nominated by Christine Shearer, director of development at the Canton Museum of Art, where he will have a solo exhibition from May 11 through July 29, 2013.

The 2013 Governor's Awards selection committee consisted of five Ohio Arts Council board members and three residents who were selected by Ohio Citizens for the Arts. The awards will be presented at a luncheon in Columbus on May 15. Jill Snyder, director of the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, will receive an award in the arts administration category. All eight winners will receive an original work of art by 1998 CIA graduate Susan Danko.
