CLEVELAND: Scott Ligon, a digital artist, author, filmmaker and Cleveland Institute of Art Assistant Professor, will demonstrate some tricks from his book Digital Art Revolution: Creating Fine Art with Photoshop at MOCA Cleveland on Wednesday, June 9th.

The book, released internationally by Random House this past March, offers essential guidance for creating original digital artwork that takes Photoshop beyond the technical and into the creative realm. “Scott Ligon has that rare combination of extraordinary creative powers AND the ability to clearly explain and transmit this process to others. I recommend Digital Art Revolution to anyone who wants to create fine art on their computer,” says Michael W. Dean, director of D.I.Y. or Die: How to Survive as an Independent Artist.

In his presentation, Ligon will discuss the new landscape that intersects digital technology and fine art. The author will also explain some of the varied and amazing creative potential of digital art from a truly fine art perspective. With this added tool, participants can continue a personal journey of self-expression beyond the confines of these mediums.

Digital Art Revolution goes beyond simply using Photoshop to alter photographs or imitate various historical painting styles; instead Ligon teaches readers how to use the software as an expressive tool to develop their own unique style. The progressive structure of the lecture and book appeal to a broad audience - from the eager beginner just learning Photoshop tools to the technically advanced digital artist looking to expand the possibilities of the medium. Welcome to the revolution!

OR DIE: How To Survive as an Independent Artist and author of $30 Film School

“What strikes one first about artist Scott Ligon is his ability to grasp complex, creative abstractions - interpreting unwieldy data into useful, articulate information. Surely that has something to do with his role as Coordinator for the Digital Foundation Curriculum at the Cleveland Institute of Art.” - Max Eternity, Art Digital Magazine

“Now comes along Scott Ligon to add an impressive voice and contribution to the conversation about digital fine art with his new book.” - Barney Davey, Art Print Issues

Digital Art Revolution is an essential guide if you’re at all interested in tweaking your images and creating fine art with Photoshop. Scott Ligon, Coordinator of the Digital Foundation curriculum at the Cleveland Institute of Art and a top digital artist, explains in such simple, clear language that it’s a joy to jump right into Photoshop and start creating. Ligon gives us the best short introduction to Photoshop I have seen. This is an excellent book from which to learn to make art through photography. It’s a joy and pleasure to study with him.” - Tim Boxer, 15 Minutes Magazine

“This book is aimed at Photoshop users of all levels, and has both tutorials and inspirational artwork from over 40 noted digital artists. It’s written in an easy-to-follow style and has lots of great tips.” - Photoshop Daily

Digital Art Revolution showcases the work of 40 top digital artists. While many books on digital art offer pedestrian images, this book travels along the edges and presents some radical examples, such as the wonderfully weird portraits by DEVO’s Mark Motherbaugh. This book is an enticing introduction to the possibilities available and is likely to seduce traditional artists away from their easels.” - Zoom Street

“If I used a textbook in my digital art classroom, it would very likely be Scott Ligon’s newDigital Art Revolution: Creating Fine Art with Photoshop. As it is, I’m all over the place with my curriculum; so for my own purposes, it will serve as an excellent reference. Drawing on the work of different artists, Ligon takes us through various tutorials that range from basic to more advanced techniques in Photoshop - and in doing so builds a clear path through what is otherwise an easy program to understand yet hard to master.” - David Gran, Carrot Revolution
