CIA Studio Spotlight: Glass

Two CIA glass artists demonstrate the beauty of glassmaking as they create pieces for the Cleveland International Piano Competition.

Learn about the art of glassmaking as Chadd Lacy, the technical assistant in CIA's glass department, creates a set of 50 pieces for the 2011 Cleveland International Piano Competition. He's assisted by CIA glass major Eric Hernandez '12.

In this thoughtful, almost meditative demonstration, Lacy's narrative draws a beautiful parallel between art, dance, and music: "You have to teach your hand to do a particular thing. A lot of the time there's nothing to learn from but repetition. Eventually your hand understands what your mind is telling it to do."

Find out more about the Cleveland Institute of Art's BFA program in glass. CIA also offers glassblowing classes for the community through its Continuing Education program—download the catalog at cia.edu/continuinged.
