NAPS, a two-person show featuring new works by CIA alumni Marcus Brathwaite ’12 and Justin Woody ’15, was exhibited at Praxis Fiber Workshop this past November. Join Praxis Gallery Manager Annmarie Suglio ’15 for a moderated discussion between the three Cleveland Institute of Art alumni about the collaborative development of this exhibition and their lives post-graduation.
Marcus Brathwaite graduated from Cleveland Institute of Art in 2012 with a degree in Ceramics. You may have seen him djing bumpin jams at your local art gathering or helping you out with a project at the Sears think[box] where he is a full time Studio Manager.
Annmarie Suglio lives and works in Cleveland. She graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2015, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fiber + Material Studies and Sculpture. Annmarie has shown work at Zygote Press Inc., Forum Artspace at the 78th Studios, and at Reinberger Gallery at the Cleveland Institute of Art. She is currently the gallery manager at Praxis Fiber Workshop, a non-profit organization designed to revitalize the field of fiber art in the Cleveland area; curator of The Sunroom, exhibiting artists who explore and experiment in a domestic space; gallery assistant for Transformer Station; and administrative assistant for FRONT International, Cleveland's first triennial art exhibition.
Justin Woody is a Cleveland-based artist and actor, born and raised in Canton, OH. He received a BFA in Painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2015. During, and years before his enrollment at CIA, Justin has been involved in many plays and musicals in Canton and the Greater Cleveland area. Some of his favorite roles include Donkey in Shrek at Near West Theatre and Mercury Summerstock in Cleveland, and more recent roles as Gator in Memphis the Musical, Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast, and Snoopy in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown at the Canton Players Guild. He will play the lead role of Youth in the musical Passing Strange, this summer at the Karamu house in Cleveland.
Justin recently completed a six-month artist residency at Praxis Fiber Workshop, where he worked with Annmarie Suglio and Jessica Pinsky. There he continued to learn traditional weaving techniques using hair, jewelry, blunt raps, and clothing. In November 2017, Justin opened his first two-man show at Praxis, titled NAPS, with fellow CIA graduate Marcus Brathwaite.
