Artists Auction: a Dan Tranberg Memorial Scholarship Benefit. The Bonfoey Gallery and faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Art have brought together a diverse and plentiful grouping of artists’ works for a silent auction to benefit the Dan Tranberg Memorial Scholarship Fund. Members of art scenes local and beyond have responded to the call for auction donations, including Dana Schutz, Douglas Lucak, Judith Salomon, Douglas Sanderson, Julie Langsam, Sarah Kabot, Daniel Dove, Maggie Denk-Leigh, Tommy White, Amber Kempthorn, Royden Watson, Mike Meier, and Nikki Woods. The show features works in a wide range of media - painting, photography, print, ceramics, and mixed media - all notably high in their quality of production. The predominance of vibrant and joyful color is a signature of the work that has been contributed by the artists, making a striking tribute to Dan in their celebration of life and art. 2

After Dan’s death last May, his family planned to establish a memorial scholarship in his name at his home institution, the Cleveland Institute of Art. In particular, the family wanted their scholarship to support the education of artists who, like Dan, were pursuing careers that struck a balance between studio art and writing. Dan’s colleagues in the art community, also seeking suitable ways to honor his legacy as artist, critic, and teacher, reached out to the Bonfoey Gallery, which has represented his paintings since 1999. Out of the ensuing conversations, Artists Auction was born.

Dan was esteemed for his widely published art writing and the many exhibitions of his subtle and epigrammatic abstract paintings . His book, Acrylic Fusion (2012) was a compendium of acrylic painting techniques. His students embraced his kind, yet exacting teaching style. Douglas Max Utter, co-founder with Dan and Amy Sparks of Angle Magazine, described his classroom magic as “a close, sympathetically intelligent reading of artworks based as much in love as in knowledge, an intuitive method that educated the heart as well as the mind and hands.” (Collective Arts Network Journal) The Dan Tranberg Memorial Scholarship will keep Dan’s legacy of art making, writing, and teaching alive and present in Cleveland’s art community.
