Curriculum

Cleveland Institute of Art’s curriculum is based on a depth of learning in each major combined with a breadth of knowledge in as many areas as we offer. Faculty provide one-on-one instruction and bring their professional partnerships and connections into the classroom.

Four Years of Art and Design

All first-year Cleveland Institute of Art students begin with the Foundation curriculum, a yearlong intensive exploration of color, form, design, and creative problem solving. Liberal Arts classes weave throughout all four years, providing essential communications skills and a solid grounding in art history. In the sophomore students begin taking classes in their major.

CIA’s senior experience, the BFA Exhibition, is unlike any other art and design school capstone. Students present a body of work and are critiqued as a professional—with the focus on helping refine an artistic path before they graduate.

In addition, CIA offers students study abroad opportunities and real-world experience with professionals in the art and design industry.
