Student Health + Counseling

University Health Service

University Health Service (UHS) is staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and registered nurses. A number of the physicians are affiliated with University Hospitals of Cleveland and with the Case School of Medicine.

Most care is delivered by the staff of the General Medical Clinic, and students are seen on an appointment basis only, except in case of emergency. UHS offers specialty clinics such as Skin, Dermatology, Allergy and Women's Health. For consultation required beyond this, UHS usually refers to physicians and services available at University Hospitals of Cleveland or other outside providers. Appointments for the General or Specialty Clinics, except for Women's Health, may be made by calling 368.4539. Appointments for Women's Health may be made by calling 216.368.2453.

CIA students may visit Health Service free of charge, even if you have an outside insurance. For more information about services and student health insurance, please visit the University Health Service's website.

Counseling Services

University Counseling Services (UCS) and its divisions of Collegiate Behavioral Health (CBH) and Prevention & Recovery Services (PRS) offers students help with their personal counseling and behavioral health needs, including individual, couples and group counseling, psychiatric medication management, stress management and recovery support. Last year almost 1,300 students benefited from these services.

Generally a short-term, solution-focused counseling approach is offered, but on occasion, longer term care may be needed for which a referral to professionals in the Cleveland area will be offered. Offices are staffed with psychologists, social workers, and part-time consulting psychiatrists. Most services are provided without cost but some specialty services may require a fee.

First-time appointments

First-time appointments are scheduled for about 60 minutes so that students can more fully explore their concerns, thoughts and feelings with a counselor. These appointments are usually available within 5 to 10 days by calling 216.368.5872. For privacy and security reasons, UCS can not schedule appointments via email.

Need to speak with a counselor on a more urgent basis?

Brief, thirty-minute counseling appointments are available throughout the week for students who need help in solving a more pressing problem. During these brief sessions, support, advice and follow-up recommendations will be offered. Please call 216.368.5872 to schedule a time during the week.

Are you experiencing a life-threatening emergency?

Monday through Friday, during regular office hours, call 216.368.5872. A counselor will be available to speak with you on the phone (or in person) in the Sears 220 location only. Requests for specific counselors cannot be honored when accessing emergency care service.

After hours, weekends and holidays, contact the UCS Counselor On-Call at 216.368.5872 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room.

Canceling or Rescheduling an Appointment

Call 216.368.5872, Monday through Friday, between 8:30am and 5pm. Please call at least 24 hours in advance so that your appointment time may be given to another student. Rescheduling an appointment for another time in the same week may not be possible.

For more information about individual and/or group counseling, please visit University Counseling Service's website.
