The Cleveland Institute of Art Presents Success by Design: Face-to-Face with Michael Bierut

CLEVELAND:The Cleveland Institute of Art presents Success by Design: Face to Face with Michael Bierut, a lecture and visual presentation by a global leader in design, on Friday, Nov. 13, 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Institute’s Gund Building, 11141 East Boulevard, Cleveland. Admission is $20 for advance tickets; $25 after Nov. 9 and at the door.

Billed as a casual, sociable professional development activity, Success by Design will appeal to professionals interested in face-to-face networking and adding value to their companies through good design. The event will begin with wine, cheese and informal networking from 4:30-5:00 p.m.; Bierut will speak from 5:00-5:30 p.m. and then take audience questions until roughly 6:00 p.m. Socializing/networking will continue until 6:30 p.m., with opportunities for participants to meet Bierut and tour exhibitions in the Institute’s Reinberger Galleries.

Bierut, a Cleveland native who is partner in one of the world’s leading design firms, will address how great design can transform a business that is merely surviving into one that is thriving. He speaks from broad experience, having risen in his field as a graphic designer to become a partner at Pentagram. With offices in New York City, Austin, San Francisco, London and Berlin, Pentagram does work in graphic design, corporate identity, architecture, interiors and products for clients as diverse as the Walt Disney Company, Benetton, Alfred A. Knopf, Saks Fifth Avenue, Princeton University, the Library of Congress, and the New York Jets.

Bierut has won hundreds of design awards and his work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Library of Congress; and the Museum fürKunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Germany. He is an engaging and animated speaker who can help motivate business people to see challenges from new perspectives.

His presentation at CIA coincides with two traveling exhibitions of outstanding design that will be on display in the Institute’s Reinberger Galleries: AIGA 365 and 17 Swedish Designers. Before and after Bierut’s lecture – which will be held in Aitken Auditorium, immediately adjacent to the galleries – guests will have opportunities to view these inspiring works in design and enjoy wine, cheese and other refreshments.

AIGA 365 is a showcase of America’s best design work in visual communication as judged by a distinguished jury of designers from among thousands of entries to the American Institute of Graphic Art’s annual competition. The exhibition will also include a selection of 50 award-winning book covers.

The 17 Swedish Designers exhibition spotlights the very popular, uncluttered elegance of contemporary Swedish design in the form of furniture, textiles and functional and decorative works in glass, ceramics, wood, steel and other materials.

Founded in 1882, The Cleveland Institute of Art is an accredited, independent college of art and design committed to leadership and vision in all forms of visual arts education.
