Pre-College 2011: What Are You Doing This Summer?

Take charge of your future-come to CIA's Pre-College Program to get a head start on your dream career in art and design.

If you’re entering grades 10–12 and want to find out what art school is really like, come live and learn at the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Pre-College Program from July 10 to 23, 2011. You’ll sharpen your artistic skills, experiment with new media, and build your portfolio, all while earning three units of college credit.

Working alongside dozens of other students who share your passion, you’ll have exclusive access to the tools and processes available only at a premier college of art and design. Classes this year range from animation to glass to industrial design. You’ll work in studio for nearly six hours each day, stay in the CIA student residence hall, and explore University Circle, the world-class cultural district we call home.

“This was a great learning experience,” said a 2010 participant. “It provided me with an in-depth view of what working at a level closer to college is really like.” Another participant commented, “I met so many new friends and I’m going to stay in touch with all of them until we meet up here again for college.”

In addition to making art and having fun, you’ll learn how you can turn your passion into a career. Our Career Center Director will teach you about the world of work as an artist or designer. A gallery curator will explain the importance of your artist statement and how to document your work. And an admissions counselor will review your portfolio and advise you on how to improve its strength.

“When we review the portfolios of applicants who have completed a pre-college program in art and design, we notice a difference,” said Robert Borden, CIA’s executive director of enrollment and financial aid. “Not only is their work stronger, but they’re much more focused and confident about their decision to go to an exclusive art school.”
