Oil Portrait Artist to Give Lectures, Workshop at CIA

Award-winning oil portrait artist Marvin Mattelson comes to CIA in June 2011 to give a two-week workshop and a series of evening lectures.

Marvin Mattelson, an award-winning oil portrait artist based in New York City, comes to the Cleveland Institute of Art June 6–18 to give a two-week portrait oil painting workshop and a series of evening lectures.

Lectures
Lectures are open to the public for a fee of $50 each (and are included in the price of the workshop for participants). All are held from 6 to 8:30pm at CIA.

Sun 6/5 Introductory slide lecture:
"Everything I know about painting I learned at the Met"
Tue 6/7 Color theory
Wed 6/8 Color mixing and palette set-up
Tue 6/14 Modeling factors: turning the form
Thu 6/16 Marketing and promotion

Call 216.421.7461 to purchase your ticket(s) in advance. Tickets may also be purchased 30 minutes prior to the beginning of each lecture.

Workshop
The workshop takes place Mon–Sat, June 6–18, 10am–5pm. The $1,600 fee includes the 12 workshop days plus all five evening lectures listed above. Go to cia.edu/continuinged and download our summer catalog for the full description (pg 3) and registration form (pg 31).

About the artist
Marvin Mattelson is an award-winning oil portrait artist who draws over 35 years of professional experience as an artist and an educator. Nine of his paintings are included in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institute. Mattelson has been commissioned to create portraits for CEOs from MetLife, NYNEX, and ITT Corp as well as the Archbishop of New York, Edward Cardinal Egan, for which he was awarded first place by the Portrait Society of America. Mattelson is a distinguished educator who teaches classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and conducts private portrait and figure painting workshops around the country.
