CIA Assistant Professor Barry Underwood presents an intimate celebration of light and landscape in a solo photography exhibition.
Barry Underwood presents an intimate celebration of light and landscape in a solo exhibition of his photographic work, Summer Nights, opening on May 13 at Skew Gallery in Calgary, Alberta.
Underwood is an Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Film, Video, and Photographic Arts at The Cleveland Institute of Art, whose Photography program was recently ranked #2 in the nation by Education-Portal.com. His work has been chosen for a 2009 Spotlight Award in Color Magazine, and images from his Headlands residency were featured in an article on color photography in the January 03, 2010 issue of the London Times Spectrum magazine.
The photographic work in Summer Nights is a culmination of three consecutive years of summer residencies at the Banff Center for the Arts, Banff, Alberta, Canada; I-Park in East Haddam, Connecticut; and the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California. Inspired by his immersion into new landscapes, Underwood creates light installations in isolated and unexpected settings. With submergible lights, glowing trees, and fields of mystical radiating spheres, Underwood’s photographs depict fairytale-like moments within settings of intense natural beauty.
Barry Underwood earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in Theater and Photography from Indiana University Northwest and a Master’s degree in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art. His work has been presented in several international art fairs including Annual International Los Angeles Photographic Art Exposition, NEXT 2009, NADA in Miami, and Scope in Basel, Switzerland. His work is included in corporate and private collections across North America and Europe.
