The Cleveland Institute of Art, The Sculpture Center, and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will jointly host a free, day-long sculpture conference on November 6, 2010, starting at 10am.

“Concerning the State of Sculpture: What is sculpture, and how does one teach it?” will be held in CIA’s Joseph McCullough Center for the Visual Arts at 11610 Euclid Avenue.

New York City-based artist Jeanne Silverthorne [artwork pictured], a sculpture professor at Columbia University and the School of Visual Arts who shows with David McKee Gallery, will deliver the conference’s keynote address. Two open roundtable discussions will be held: one on the state of sculpture, the other on teaching sculpture. Attendees’ input by dialogue throughout the afternoon will be crucial.

Conference attendees are invited to an evening reception at The Sculpture Center from 5:30 to 8pm as part of the opening of an installation exhibition by CIA artist-in-residence Beth Campbell. Also on view at The Sculpture Center are The Last Time I Saw Richard, a new installation by Heather McGill, Head of Sculpture at Cranbrook Academy of Art; and Repent, Harlequin! by Aaron L. Peterman.

Attendees are also invited to the artist-oriented 2010 Annual Benefit & Auction, "App to the Future," at SPACES Gallery that same evening. Finally, attendees are invited to the opening of Anatomica Aesthetica at CIA’s Reinberger Galleries on Friday, November 5 from 6 to 8pm. Guest curator Laura Lindgren will speak at 6pm.
