CIA awarded $9.3 million in scholarships, awards, financial aid

Recipients of 95 named scholarships announced to cheering students May 1

As of May 1, Cleveland Institute of Art had awarded students over $9.3 million in scholarships, awards, and financial aid to be applied to the 2015-2016 academic year. The winners of 95 of those awards – the named scholarships presented to current students – were announced at an assembly on May 1.

In keeping with CIA tradition, students ate pizza, drank soft drinks, and cheered on their classmates as some 140 student names were announced. CIA’s oldest named scholarships date back to the early 1900s.

CIA’s most generous awards, the President’s Scholarships, are granted on the basis of high school academic records and outstanding portfolio submissions. They provide full tuition for eight consecutive semesters, provided recipients maintain a 3.0 GPA. Current recipients of the President’s Scholarships, who are ineligible for any other awards, are Julia Maddalina ’18, and Austin Frank ’16. Graduating seniors Annelise Brennan, Rose Haserodt, and Angela Ko were also President’s Scholarship recipients.

Also announced at the assembly was that at Commencement on May 16, the 2015 student speakers will be Game Design major Javae Brown and Graphic Design major Nolan Beck. Also at Commencement, Professor and Jewelry + Metals Department Chair Matthew Hollern will receive the prestigious Viktor Schreckengost Teaching Award, in recognition of teaching excellence over the course of at least 10 years. Hollern is now completing his 26th year of teaching at CIA.
