CIA awarded $9.2 million in scholarships, awards, financial aid

Recipients of 94 named scholarships announced to cheering students May 2

As of May 1, Cleveland Institute of Art had awarded students over $9.2 million in scholarships, awards, and financial aid to be applied to the 2014-2015 academic year. The winners of 94 of those awards – the named scholarships presented to current students – were announced at an assembly on May 2. In keeping with CIA tradition, students ate pizza, drank soft drinks, and cheered on their classmates as some 140 student names were announced. CIA’s oldest named scholarships date back to the early 1900s.

The college awarded six new scholarships this year:

  • The Lauren K. Antonuccio Memorial Scholarship in Industrial Design, established in memory of Antonuccio, a 2002 CIA graduate
  • The Chrysler Foundation Transportation Design Scholarship
  • The Tom Horn Memorial Scholarship, in honor CIA’s late director of information technology
  • Janice Kalman Memorial Scholarship in Photography, established in memory of Kalman, a 1971 CIA graduate
  • The Eugene J. and Barbara R. Trela Scholarship for Biomedical Art In Memory of Walenty and MaryAnn Trela

CIA’s most generous awards, the President’s Scholarships, are granted on the basis of high school academic records and outstanding portfolio submissions. They provide full tuition for eight consecutive semesters, provided recipients maintain a 3.0 GPA. Current recipients, who are ineligible for any other awards, are Annelise Brennan, Austin Frank, Rose Haserodt, and Angela Ko.

Also announced at the assembly was that at commencement on May 17, Painting major Forrest James will be the 2014 student speaker and beloved Professor and Illustration Department Chair Dominic Scibilia will receive the prestigious Viktor Schreckengost Teaching Award.
