Campus Project Update: JMC Renovation Is Complete

The renovation of CIA's historic Joseph McCullough Center for the Visual Arts was officially completed in December 2010.

The renovation of the Joseph McCullough Center for the Visual Arts was completed on schedule in December and CIA President Grafton J. Nunes is delighted with the results.

“The renovation has surpassed our dreams,” he said. “The sense of clean, open, and well-lit space throughout is remarkable, and the newly installed air and temperature controls in this awesome 165,000-square-foot facility ensure that our students and visitors will, for the first time, be able to enjoy year-round comfort. The newly decorated entryway, with its hanging banners, plants, and displayed art, celebrates the quality of the CIA experience and the work our students and faculty produce.”

The top-to-bottom renovation also involved constructing new, technology-enabled classrooms; replacing the leaky roof and windows for greater energy efficiency and comfort; restoring historic molding; updating plumbing and electrical systems; painting and re-covering floors throughout; and installing exterior lighting to create a dramatic nighttime view of the building’s historic façade from Euclid Avenue.

Making the renovation’s completion official, the City of Cleveland issued a final certificate of occupancy on Dec. 16, certifying that the McCullough building is in compliance with the building and zoning codes of the city and in compliance with the Ohio Building Code.

Nunes, CIA administrators, and members of the Institute’s board of directors are now reviewing the plans for a new building to be constructed immediately west of and fully interconnected with the McCullough building. The goal is to get construction underway later this year.
