Student protests and a general strike erupted in Paris 50 years ago this month, impacting a generation of French citizens. In this acclaimed new essay film, a Brazilian moviemaker combines amateur and professional footage of France’s May ‘68 uprising with extraordinary clips from two of the 1960s other major revolutions—in Czechoslovakia, where Russian tanks crushed the Prague Spring in August ‘68, and in China, where Mao’s Cultural Revolution uprooted families in the name of “progress.” A thoughtful voiceover narration comments on the “now” and the “then.” “Melancholy, inspiring and evocative.” –J. Hoberman. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 127 min.
Thursday’s show will be introduced at 6:30 by Grace An, Associate Professor of French and Cinema Studies at Oberlin College.
