Claudia Cardinale stars in Visconti’s visually intoxicating update of the Electra myth. A young Italian woman, now living in America, returns to her Tuscan hometown after WWII for a memorial service for her Jewish father, killed at Auschwitz. There, amid local ruins and her family’s crumbling mansion, she reunites with a brother with whom she shares a scandalous past, and with her mother and stepfather, who both may have betrayed her dad.
